“Good artist copy, Great artist steal”
Steal Like An Artist by Artist is a book that tells you how to think and create. Starting with its name “Steal Like An Artist”, Austin’s teaches how to really steal someone’s work (not copy it) and build something totally of your own.
One of the greatest lines that stuck me thinking was
“Nobody is born with a style or a voice.”
For example, we are the outcome of our parents’ genes but we are still unique. That’s the thing with Creativity.
The second most important thing Austin mentioned was “Don’t wait for getting ready”. We often don’t start something because we want it perfect. A perfect setup to study or a perfect day to walk. Sometimes it’s just necessary to go out there and start. Everything can be figured thereafter.
Austin also mentions ” Write the book, you want to read.” It’s very deep if you try to relate it with general life. Many creators and entrepreneurs have created something that they would like to consume or see in the world.
Another thing I loved about this book was when Austin mentioned how side hobbies and projects are important. Ask yourself, what happens when you constantly engage in only one thing. You might get a block, or just want to finish that thing and moveone.
That’s when hobbies and side projects help. They expand your horizons of learning and help you understand more perspectives. This directly and indirectly helps in your main work, giving you a much needed break as well new ideas.
” A hobby is something that is all yours. You don’t have to share it with anyone.”
How do you steal an artist?
According to Austin Kleon’s, Steal Like An Artist, you can steal like an artist if you copy the thinking of someone rather than ideas. We humans can’t copy the exact same thing and in that process we fill in originality. That’s how you Steal Like An Artist
You should ask yourself “Whom to copy and “What to copy”. We often have some inspirations that we look up to. Learning from them or getting inspired by their work is simply a concept of Stealing Like An Artist.
Austin says ” If you copy one person it is plagiarism. If you copy many, it’s a research”.
Some Quotes from Steal Like An Artist
